AT&T spent decades building the American telephone network. By the 1960s, the Bell System connected 80 million phones across the country. Most of the economic value created by that infrastructure โ€” business communications, commerce, the services built on top of connectivity โ€” accrued to companies using the network, not to AT&T. The utility captured regulated returns. The users captured competitive advantage.

The internet repeated this pattern. Telecom companies spent billions laying fiber and building broadband infrastructure during the 1990s. The value accrued to Google, Amazon, and Facebook โ€” companies that built on top of the infrastructure without owning it. The current AI infrastructure build is different in one important respect: the same companies that captured value from the last infrastructure cycle are the ones building this one. Amazon Web Services subsidizes Amazon's AI infrastructure investment while providing the platform other companies use. This vertical integration creates a structural advantage the AT&T analog didn't have.

The Open-Source Leak the Spending Can't Seal

The rebuttal: the segment that needs that premium is smaller than the overall market the $650 billion bet is sized for. The $650 billion bet is building your tools for you. The hyperscaler infrastructure spending, whatever its return profile for those companies, is building compute infrastructure, model capability, and tooling that the rest of the market gets access to. The 15-agent company isn't funding that infrastructure. It's using it.
